我觉得for是“当作，作为”的意思。并且可以省略。如：I came here (for) the first time。再者，关于that的问题其实是定语从句的一个问题，比较好点的语法书上都有讲的。就是that 代替关系副词的问题。给你一个例子，是去年高一（2003年人教社版）英语课本上的。When I was a child,I was afraid of hospitals。My parents dragged me to the hospital each time I was ill。关于这样的句子，近些年也有一种说法，认为each time用作连词，引导时间状语从句。只要time表示“次数”时，都有类似的用法。又如：I fell in love with her the first time I saw her。这句话也可以理解为： I fell in love with her for the first time when/(that) I saw her。
